History and Culture

The town remained an unknown hamlet until the construction of Enchey Monastery, in 1840, when it became a centre of Buddhist teachings. But it was during the time of the British rule in India that Gangtok truly became a prominent town.

The culture of Gangtok reflects the different ethnic groups of people who make their home in this city. Music is a much-loved form of entertainment in the city. Western music, Hindi rock songs and Nepali rock music are all very popular in Gangtok. Brightly costumed monastic dances, called ‘chhaams’, are performed during festive occasions. It plays a great role in making Incredible India even more Incredible!

  • The Rumtek Monastery is the seat of Gyalwa Karmapa which is the head of 900 – year old Karma Kagyu lineage. The most interesting art object in this monastery is the ‘Black Hat’ which is studded with rubies, gold, diamonds and other precious stones.

  • Gangtok has become the first Indian city to implement organic farming and is called India’s first Organic city.

  • It has a unique department which caters to the need for the proper functioning of more than two hundred temples, monasteries, mosques, churches, and gurudwaras(Sikh Temple) situated all over the state of Sikkim.

Climate

Gangtok enjoys a pleasant weather throughout the year. The best time to visit Gangtok is between October and mid-December. Clear views of the Himalayan peaks are guaranteed in these months.
